The Cracker Barrel Restaurant
Santa Maria's yet-to-open Cracker Barrel Old Country Store restaurant already has some of the homespun decorations familiar to patrons of the. The Cracker Barrel menu is based on traditional Southern American. The restaurant decor resembles an general store from the 1800-1900s. Each restaurant has a stone fireplace and local items.
You may not have to visit Grandma's to get your buttermilk biscuits in a rocking chair anymore.
The Cracker Barrel restaurant, known for country cookin' and Southern hospitality, may be on its way to the Northwest Reno area, according to plans recently submitted to the city of Reno.
The restaurant would be off Keystone Avenue and Fifth Street, according to plans submitted to the city by S3 Development Project and Wood Rodgers. The site currently is an empty lot.
The restaurant, known for fixin's and dumplin's and other -in's, has breakfast all day, including grits, fried apples, hashbrown casserole and country fried steak drowned in sawmill gravy.
The restaurant also has homemade pies and is known too for its quaint gift shop and front porch with rocking chairs, a home-away-from-home for some.
The first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store opened in 1969 in Lebanon, Tenn. Cracker Barrel now has 661 locations in 45 states.
Why the name? The term 'cracker-barrel' was first used in 1916 as an adjective to describe something as friendly and down-home, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and the word emerged from country stores of the era. It evolved since customers were known to lounge around and chew the fat around the barrels, which were known to store soda crackers.

Cracker Barrel's vintage brown and orange logo is a nod to the etymology.
The nearest Cracker Barrel restaurant to Reno is currently in Rocklin, Calif. The Cracker Barrel is not to be confused with the Cracker Box Diner in Carson City which also, as luck would have it, serves up a mean steak n' eggs.
